# Certified mail vs regular mail: which records do you need?

The choice depends on the record your recipient or adviser requires. An ordinary letter is a practical way to mail a document; USPS Certified Mail is an extra service with a mailing receipt and delivery or attempted-delivery information. A separate return receipt provides a signature record when available and purchased.

## How to choose for your document

1. ### Identify the requirement.
Read the recipient’s instructions. If a deadline, proof of mailing or a signature record matters, confirm the exact requirement with the recipient or an appropriate adviser before choosing a service.
2. ### Check the supported service.
Postedly offers an ordinary letter and a certified-mail option. Its certified catalog describes USPS certified mail with a tracking number. Do not assume Return Receipt, restricted delivery or another extra is offered unless the exact quote says so.
3. ### Review your document and quote.
Upload the finished PDF, enter complete US sender and recipient addresses, and inspect the added address sheet and every page in the proof. Confirm the selected service and total before payment.
4. ### Keep the right record.
After checkout, retain your order reference and review carrier information actually supplied for that order. A payment receipt or a proof of the document does not by itself establish mailing or delivery.

## Does certified mail arrive faster?

Certified Mail is an extra service, not a promise of faster delivery. Printing and postal transit take time; use the estimate for your actual quote and do not treat an estimated arrival as delivery confirmation.

This guide explains the product workflow and USPS terminology. It does not decide whether a particular mailing satisfies a legal notice, contract or filing requirement.
